A perfect day for a ride - partly cloudy, a bit of a light rain shower, otherwise cool and slight breeze. We rode to Afton for ice cream, then Prescott for lunch (the boxcar cafe, excellent), then across the river and down 35 to cross back at Red Wing. Cannon Valley trail to Welch to Hastings, where we had dinner at a fancy italian place on 2nd near the 61 bridge. From there, back along the same sort of route as last year, but we split up in Mendota Heights, with Tracy and I heading through West St. Paul and back via the Smith bridge. This was a really great group, a lot of fun, and the first century for Brian and Tracy. No mechanicals, and no problems along the way other than the usual soreness and painfully tired muscles. The generator LED light worked great, though Jim's Schmidt has a much nicer beam pattern, so it looked brighter. I wore chamois shorts this time, and i think i was more sore this trip than last year without them. No complaints other than a bit saddle sore, chafed nipples and slightly sore feet; legs are tired but held out fine. There's talk of doing it again in August, assuming the train and bridges aren't an issue, and i'm already looking forward to it.

Still a little cleanup to do, but rebuilt the BB and rear hub, changed the gearing to 44x16 fixed(!), and replaced the rear brakes with some Coda/Diacompe 986 cantilevers from Express. It stops much better now. The rear rim doesn't want to true perfectly, stiff spoke nipples and a slightly bent rim, but much better now. The gearing is good, i was worried it would be a little low still, but i like it. It's a little slower than i would use for a road fixie, but a good compromise for the hills and loads for the panniers.

Due to recovering muscles from the Thursday ride and sleepiness from an early day at the KWMR and late night around the campfire, I scaled back to the easy 25 mile route. It was a beautiful day out, though a bit on the hot side in the afternoon. Autumn worked a rest stop, handing out water, fruit and cheese, and had a great time. Malte and i rode back from the stop to the 25-mile start, then around the loop and back to the rest stop to meet up with Autumn. In an attempt at a surprise sprint, i attacked up a hill and had the jump on Malte for maybe 100 yards before he passed by for good. We both blew by our turn onto a long descent, hitting 39.6 mph max speed before heading back on track. Otherwise, a nice leisurely ride. Met fellow iBOB Sean with his Atlantis along the route.

It was a slower version of the usual ride, with several people planning to race this coming saturday, but it still kicked my ass. I had a good time, and i hung with the group just fine for the first 20 miles or so. The next 5 miles i was struggling to hang off the back, and was shortly dropped with no hope of catching them. My legs simply ran out of steam, and we were on a stretch where they were going ~24mph where i was holding at around 21. After a couple more miles, Malte graciously came back with me and we finished the ride together. That's a very good thing, because i was pretty much lost in exurbville by then. Looking back as we finished up, i was simply pushing too big a gear for much of the ride when i should have been spinning more. Some people on the team will undoubtedly point to the bike (the RIvendell, fenders, bell, Brooks saddle), but it wasn't the bike; it as the engine. I was feeling good toward the midway point (though i didn't know we were midway), and spent some time in the lead group, which was another mistake. Still, i had a great ride for my usual ride, it just wasn't enough to stay with the pack this time. I plan on giving it another try, probably on another Thursday when the pace is a bit slower.

Ella had 30 miles on the trail-a-bike, and was a great trooper until she just got worn out and cold at the very end. Even Malte was tired, but partly from riding the horse trails most of the way.

With a week of highs in the single digits coming up, it's time to resign myself to the squirrel cage. At least i rode one day last month. The Redwood is on the trainer, but i'm just logging this time under a separate 'bike' so the bike miles tracked are actual distance. This was a baseline time trial ride, i'll retest in a month. It took some tinkering to get the computer set up on the rear wheel, so i lost some of my warmup before starting. I could feel the month+ off the bike - my hamstrings were tight at first, so i backed off a gear and spun more to warm them up again. I tried to focus on holding a good pace, and mostly kept it around 20, but i did a lot of fidgeting around getting comfortable on the trainer again. It was tough to keep it up through the last 10 minutes, but held on ok, with a mini sprint for the last 30 seconds.

This time, the results were posted in good time, but though the organizers said they'd be giving out medals "in a few minutes", nothing was done about it until after the A race. An incredibly frustrating lack of communication, it sucks to wait an hour in the cold and still go home empty handed.

Despite an early start, we managed to lose enough time changing and waiting on the portapotty to miss pre-riding the course. As it turned out, the course was mostly flat, some singletrack but nothing too technical. Two places had loose sand, one was about a 50-foot sandpit after a barrier, for a short run. Overall, a flat open course with good stretches for recovery and speed - 24.6mph max today. One for the CXin' roadies. Malte suffered a broken chain on the first lap at the short & rideable runup, apparently went in to it with too big a gear. When the chain broke he went down and got a bad scrape on the back of his knee. He ran the rest of the lap and the pit support put it back together for him, so he finished riding, but a lap down. Probably 2nd or 3rd in his group.

Long, twisty course, some nice singletrack, a spiral staircase-like runup, rough in the grass, one fairly steep rideup. Nothing too technical, but not too flat and fast either. If anything, not much space to recover, but overall a nice course. I finished 19th, Malte was 5th overall, first C3. I was a little tired today, definitely a little dehydrated, but a reasonably good pace through the race. Caught up with Jeff Lisle on lap 4, then he repassed me for lap 5, and i hung with him til the finish, each of us passing two in the last lap. Fun race overall, hope they have there again, i liked the course.

Nice course, pretty much looped the circumference of the park, lots of up and down the hills, with two sets of stair runups and one steep bur rideable hill climb. I felt pretty good, had a good start in the top 12-15 riders, and kept it pretty steady until fading a bit on the last lap. The race ran 6 laps, and i was done in after about 5 1/2. I think it was the cold, plus an increasingly sore back from the hill climbing, and maybe the clif shot wore off too. One small gripe: they apparently didn't post any results until after the A race was done (nothing up after the second A lap when we left, too cold to wait all day). Malte finished around 5th overall for the Cs, but they put him in C1, so he didn't get the prize for winning C3, which is his usual group. According to people at the registration table, the C results were supposed to be posted by the end of the B race, and it was too cold for most people to hang around the for whole event. A fun course, but that part sucked. A maybe race for next year.

The course was dry and flat until the last lap or so when the leaves started getting slippery. The race went well, no crashes (one sideways slip on the leaves, last lap), and i felt stronger than last year. I had a chance to pre-ride the course this year, and it was a good refresher and warmup. I had a pretty consistent ride, slowing down a bit by the last lap, but had a good 32.2mph sprint at the end (with Malte drafting me). Rode all the run-ups except for the steeper one on the last lap, because of wet leaf traction problems. Malte was about 3 places ahead of me until almost the end of the first lap, when he dropped his chain and lost a couple of minutes fixing it. He said he was tired the first couple of laps, but caught up to finish right behind me by the end. Without the chain problems, he probably would have been in the top 10 somewhere. He's definitely fast, i mainly gained ground by going fast in the rougher stuff. The initial posted rankings had me 13th, Malte 14th out of 35 total in the C race. Malte won the C3 category though, Juniors 15-18! He got a nice shop credit at GP.

Great meeting with folks from the city of st. paul traffic planning office, run by Russ Stark of the Midway TMO and the director of the St. Paul TMO (didn't get her name). Turnout was mostly from our general neighborhood, it seemed, with one guy who bikes from Hudson to Mpls for work. First a presentation of bike-related projects from the last few years, a lot of pictures of bike striped streets. Lots of good bike lanes going in, most of them not in my regular riding routes, but good to know about. There was an open discussion section where people threw out ideas for projects, policies and general ideas for improving cycling and getting more cyclists involved. For projects, some sort of bike access along Snelling and University avenues was a popular topic, there was interest in the Ayd Mill route, and discussion about the bad condition of the Shephard road path. Lots of discussion about the gaps between paths, but there are a good number of projects already funded and on the schedule. For other ideas, lots of talk about traffic enforcement for speeding and anti-cyclist behavior and cyclist safety instruction. Overall, a good meeting, and the preliminary results from the recent biking survey seem to support the need to extend and connect the existing routes into a cohesive network of safe cycling routes. The most interesting and best idea of the night, i thought was to convince the city to adopt the Complete The Streets initiative, where bike/ped access is considered and integrated into every city street project.

He turned down my way to join me for a mile or so, and we chatted about bikes and our kids. Very nice guy, i'd love to have one of his frames someday.

I've done most of the setup tweaking already, trying it out on the trainer, so not much to change now. The bars are a bit lower than the road bike, and the drops feel like a bit of a stretch. The tops feel great though, and with the fat brake levers it's very comfy. The saddle is still experimental, the mtb saddle for now, not too bad. Everything is working well though, shifting is clean, even with the Very Old Suntour front, and the brakes seem plenty strong. The tires are definitely better for offroad riding; the square shoulders fight short turns on pavement, but they roll nice otherwise. I can't wait for the ground to firm up some so i can get it out in some dirt - with these tires it feels like more of a dirt bike. ps. New Bike! New Bike! wheeee!

Nice course, with a mudhole/stream crossing, wooden stair runup, and a runup with 2 obstacles to the finish line. Feeling slow after being sick and a couple of weeks not really riding, but did reasonably well. One crash on lap 1, on an off-camber wet grass turn, no real damage. Could have used some knobbier tires for the wetter stretches, but they worked fine if i kept my speed up. Worst problem was muddy cleats, really hard to clip back in, kept having to bang the mud off on the cranks. Great course setup though, good space for spectators, definitely a good one to do again.

Good mix of grass track, chunky singletrack and short bits of asphalt. I started off the back of the pack but passed a handful of people as the race went on. No crashes or breakdowns, same bike setup as last week (can probably skip the water bottle though). Much smoother mount/dismounts this time, only a couple of gimpy ones as i got more tired. Had fun watching some of the B race after, very fast riders, very quick over the barriers. results update: i was 18 of 30 in my C1 group, 21 of 45 for the whole C race.

Handled the dirt course very well. The course was mostly dry, no mud, just a little wet grass that was slippery (no crashes). The course is mostly flat, a mix of singletrack and mown grass track, some paved, a long gravel stretch. Middle 36t chainring the whole race except for the last long gravel sprint in the big ring. Two barriers at the foot of steeper climbs, hiked up the first barrier climb the first 3 laps, biked it the last 2. Small hoppable log barrier. No idea how i placed, but i passed a few people. 35 minutes, i think 5 laps. I'll update when the standings are posted. results update: i was 11th of 29 in the C race, 10/20 for my C1 group.
