the way to do race results

My dad mentioned the other day on the phone that his cardio rehab guide is also a cyclocross racer, and recently sent his name. On a lark, i looked him up online to see what the races out there (in Oregon) are like, and holy cow does the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association have a nice way of tracking races and results.
Click on that link, go ahead, open it in a new tab or window and weep at the beauty of the thing. You can click on a results link and see the results. You can click on a rider name and see their results for the year so far, and any other year they’ve raced. Excuse me for a moment, i need to wipe a tear away…
Somebody needs to get with these OBRA folks and figure out how they do it. Do the racers all get bar codes tattoo’d on their necks? OK! There oughta be plenty enough racing around Minnesota to support such a thing, and plenty of geek power to build it. Wouldn’t this sort of thing be nice for promoters and racers alike? I’ll be happy to pitch in some code to make this happen here.

If you wanted to get some practice on something like this, you could set it up on the HC page. I’m thinking instead of race results, we post the results of the Saturday ride. Want to know how many donuts Ray ate, or how many potty stops Jim W made? Just clicky-clicky, and watch megabytes of cross-referenced data spill out on the screen before your eyes!

Bill, thanks for the compliment regarding OBRA’s site. I agree it is pretty spectacular what they have done. As we speak your Dad is grinding it out on the Nu-Step…He is doing well and speaks highly of you by the way. Hope to meet you some day out here in Florence or maybe in MiniSoda. We are planning an outing this summer to visit family and friends in both MSP and Duluth.
Ciao, Chris

My husband deserves the credit for the flashy stuff that you so admire on the OBRA site. I get credit for complaining about the flashy stuff and doing a lot of maintenance with the data. And, of course, Candi Murray and other OBRA officials deserve credit for working too hard and scoring all races way too deep!
Anyway, a lot of the functionality is open source. If you have your own geeks to set it up and your own slave to help fix misspellings, you can have a site like this too!

Jim – a tally of donuts and potty stops would be worthless without pictures. You’ll need to bring that Nikon on every ride now.
Chris – i think i’ll be out to florence again yet this year, it’ll be good to meet you, you can show me where to ride out there. Good luck in the rest of the series!
Cheryl – thanks for the link for the scoring system. I’m a PHP guy, this will be a good chance to get up to speed on Rails too. I’ll download it and check it out.
